Impact of Dry Rot on Colorado Decks

Not treating, or resealing your deck, porch, fascia, trim, or any other outdoor wood surface can and will turn your wood into a crumbly, brittle substance, weakening joists and boards. Just as you can have wood rot because of too much moisture, not enough moisture can lead to immense issues that you sometimes can't even see. If you paint with the wrong type of paint that isn't meant for outdoor use, you can suffocate the wood and cause it to dry rot.  If you don't reseal the wood can crumble away.

Colorado’s climate —intense sun followed by snow—creates a freeze-thaw cycle that traps moisture, which will actually accelerating rot. This can quickly become an issue, and a compromised deck can become unsafe, with structural failures often appearing at the ledger board or joists.  This rotting wood attracts  insects, which will worsen the damage.

Here are three ways we can extend the life of your deck.

  1. Yearly Maintenance: Regularly stain and seal the wood to protect against UV radiation, and moisture.
  2. Repair/Replacement: Replacing boards, small fixes.
  3. Full Sand, Seal, Repair and Replace: Severely damaged wood replaced; a full resurfacing, and sometimes replacing structural pieces is necessary to extend the life of the deck.
